Health effects of Climate Change in the UK

Summers in the UK have become warmer, the risk of a 9-day heatwave at temperatures above about 27°C present a serious risk.

Predicting severe heatwaves and their effects is difficult, but there is a one in 40 chance that by 2012 South-East England will have experienced a severe heatwave that will cause perhaps 3,000 immediate heat-related deaths.

Heat-related mortality starts in the UK when mean daily temperature exceeds about 23 °C.

Who are most at risk ?

  • Older people, especially those over 75 living on their own, and especially those living in Care Homes.
  • People suffering from mental ill health, those with dementia, who rely on help from other people.
  • People who are bed-bound.
  • People taking certain types of medication.
  • People suffering from chronic ill health.

One casualty of heat waves and summer power outages that you may not realise is your perscription medication

If you take any prescription drugs, you need to be aware that storage at high temeratures can quickly degrade the potency and stability of any medications. Most drugs are recommended to be stored at what's known as "controlled room temperature" - an average of approximately 23°C - 25°C
