Summers in the UK have become warmer,the risk of a 9-day heatwave
at temperatures above about 27°C present a serious risk.
Predicting severe heatwaves and their effects is difficult, but
there is a one in 40 chance that by 2012 South-East England will
have experienced a severe heatwave that will cause perhaps
3,000 immediate heat-related deaths.
Heat-related mortality starts
in the UK when mean daily temperature exceeds about 23 °C.
Who are most at risk ?
- Older people, especially those over 75 living on their
own, and especially those living in Care Homes.
- People suffering from mental ill health, those with dementia,
who rely on help from other people.
- People who are bed-bound.
- People taking certain types of medication.
- People suffering from chronic ill health.
